Maintaining the continuing education requirements stipulated by state licensing boards and associations for certification for therapist, counselors, psychologists, and social workers is a necessary and rewarding part of being in these professions, especially if you enjoy learning. But it can also be expensive.
We get it. That's why we have compiled a list of some of the ideas for gaining the free CE's/CEU's. Not only are there great opportunities to meet these requirements in your community, but we have found quite a few of them on the internet.
✔ Always check with your state licensing board, accreditation organizations, and professional associations to ensure the CEU’s meet your specific requirements for your state licensure and certification. You’ll want to do this regularly, as requirements by these entities may change between your renewal periods. For example:
|
✔ Consider finding trainings that meet your requirements for licensure in each state you work, as well as your CE's for continued certification for any specialized certifications you hold, and employer training expectations, so you can minimize the number of courses you need to take. For instance, if you're a licensed social worker and a registered play therapist, find courses that y count towards both continuing education requirements. |
✔ Prior to paying for a training and/or submitting it to your board for licensure renewal, check that the provider of the training has the necessary credentials and approval to meet your state or association's requirements. |
✔ Find out how you receive the necessary documentation (certificate) you need to submit for proof of completion for renewal or in case you are audited in the future. Will it be emailed to you? Will you need to download it from a portal? If so, does that link expire? |
✔ When selecting which courses you want to take, consider prioritizing topics that you find interesting and/or may increase your knowledge and skills to support your current client population and professional goals. |
